Eye tape, vanity, makeup and more

We recently posted some before and after photos of Korean plastic surgery.  Another beauty trend in Asia is eye tape or eye glue.  Essentially, many Asians have what is called a monolid.  Here's an example.

Some women choose to get plastic surgery to have the crease.  Many people mistake it for a wish to look more Caucasian or a desire to be more Westernized.  Although some women may desire this, others believe: that old age causes saggy eyelids, monolids make it harder to put on makeup (eyeliner disappears on my monolid), or somehow it just seems better aesthetically.  Other women may be going for what's called the "ullzang" look.  Ulzzang is basically a term to describe a kind of style that is mostly made up of freakishly large anime eyes, funky hairstyles, and cutesy poses and faces.  In addition to eye tape, some women also use circle lenses.  The retina is basically way larger then the normal size.

Ulzzang is similar to the whole "kawaii" concept but is a Pan-Asian trend.  Face it, Asians love sticker booth photos, the infamous peace sign, photoshopping cutesy drawings on photos, pouting and other cutesy faces.  Koreans are also really into "selca" an abbreviation for self camera.  Many KPop stars and actors post selca's on their blogs.  See the photo below of 2NE1 singer Sandara:

I'm not really sure what I think about the whole eyelid thing.  I have a monolid and I'm fine with it.  Although, the saggy eyelid thing does make me wonder.  I would never get plastic surgery to change my appearance, but with old age maybe I'd get a shot of botox or an eye lift.  In regards to eye tape, I was at a photo shoot for models when one of the Chinese models said she wanted the makeup artist to use eye tape.  She claimed one eye was smaller then the other and really wanted her eye tape.  She pulled it out of a small makeup bag and fidgeted with it while rattling off various physical insecurities.  The makeup artist refused and gently told her to find more security from within.  This girl was gorgeous to say the least!  Many Koreans say they aren't into plastic surgery while with others it seems normal.  Until I live there I would never claim to understand.  On the other hand, the eye tape and circle lenses seem kind of fun.  On par to crazy false eyelashes, it seems kind of glamorous or like a fun way to play with makeup and appearance.  While you ponder, here are some fun diagrams of eye tape.
